With storytelling at the core of this workshop, presenter Lily Myers Kaplan will showcase the concept of living-legacy through exploring an eight-step map for conscious grieving that clinicians may incorporate into their work with clients.

Death and grief are presented as initiatory rites of passage, and acceptance of death is suggested as a healing and essential part of the human experience. This innovative method addresses a multitude of losses, including both literal and metaphorical death, through use of the four standing-stones (Story, Reflection, Vision and Action) and the eight stepping stones within them.

The Loss to Legacy process includes practices such as storytelling, inner reflection, developing a vision from lessons learned through trauma, and taking action to create a living-legacy born of loss. Sample worksheets for practicing the Loss to Legacy method will offer a step-by-step process/tool for practitioners to use with grievers, helping clients translate mourning into meaning and renewed purpose.

Following this presentation, participants will:

  • Learn a step-by-step technique for processing trauma, loss, and grief that uses the four standing stones—Story, Reflection, Vision, and Action—and the eight stepping stones within them for eliciting transformative realizations that lead to renewal and the building of a living-legacy.
  • Understand how to identify and apply the tools of ceremony and creative process as methods to assist clients dealing with loss, death and grief.
  • Leave with a better understanding of how to apply empathy through storytelling processes, learning how to incorporate discussions of the acceptance of the life, death, and rebirth cycles of nature as intrinsic to the human experience.
